Do crypts need to be planted?
Similar to sword plants, you want to bury their roots while keeping the crown of the plant above ground. Crypts are very prone to melting whenever they’re introduced into a new aquarium, so don’t throw away your crypt if its emersed leaves fall off.
Do crypts always melt?
If you see your crypts begin to melt after planting, as long as it has healthy roots and you do not move it once planted, you should see new growth within a few weeks. Once you see new leaf growth, make sure to provide the crypt with enough lighting and nutrients to continue building submersed-grown leaves.
Do crypts need substrate?
Once you’ve figured out the perfect position for your crypts you can just plant them in sand or gravel substrate and you’re done! Like many other aquarium plants, they will do best with an enriched substrate and many sources consider this a necessity.

Monte Carlo is a root feeder not water column. Putting ferts in the water doesn’t do much if at all. Nutrient rich soil is the key.

With these plants, although so tolerant, stability is the key to success. They do not require fertilizer or CO2, only patience and stable growing conditions.
Can Cryptocoryne be used as aquarium plants?
Cryptocoryne have been used as aquarium plants for over 60 years. There are photographs of them even in early editions of the book Exotic Aquarium Fishes by William T. Innes.
Are crypts good for low light tanks?
On the other hand, as comparatively slow-growing, root-feeding plants, crypts are capable of making do with very low levels of dissolved CO 2, particularly in low light situations. This makes them extremely useful plants for the low-tech tank as well, often providing the only splashes of red foliage that prosper under low light.
What do crypts feed on?
Planted in sterile aquarium gravel, there is nothing for them to feed on. I have found that crypts do well for me in a fine gravel substrate amended with laterite, sometimes with the occasional use of plant food tablets.
Will Cryptocoryne wendtii grow in a large tank?
My Cryptocoryne wendtii ‘Green’ will be bright green with smaller leaves in my high light tank with CO2 and lean substrate, but will grow larger, browner leaves in my larger aquarium with nutrient-rich substrate.
