What is the difference between nuno felting and wet felting?
In a nutshell: Wet felting is the process of combining layers of wool roving and/or wool yarns into one flat piece of felt fabric. This is what folks think about as the traditional or oldest felting method. Nuno felting is the process of felting wool roving and/or wool yarns onto another fabric.
Can you Nuno felt on cotton?
While cotton can be nuno felted using the traditional rolling method, Sharon has found that students, especially beginners, are more successful when they set the rolling kit aside. Save your shoulders, elbows, and wrists and let the dryer do the work for you!

Why is my wool not felting?
If your wool is drafted on too thickly or too thinly it won’t felt into the silk properly. Remember, the barbs on your fiber have to get all the way through the silk to the back in order to adhere properly. Sharon says, “Wool works better as a team”.
How do you wet felt wool?
The Basic Steps of Wet Felting:
- Gather wool, bubble wrap or bamboo blind, soapy water, spray bottle.
- Spread out bubble wrap or a bamboo blind on a table.
- Place a thin layer of wool on the wrap or blind.
- Add a 2nd thin layer, perpendicular on the 1st.
- Spray with soapy water and work with your hands.
Can you felt with silk roving?
Nuno felting combines wool and silk to achieve gorgeous effects. You could add sari silk roving in with other fibers to give a pop of softness and color to the yarn you are spinning. You could spin your silk roving into whatever weight of yarn you choose.
