Why did they change SunnyD?
In 1999, a four-year-old girl in Rhyl, Wales, turned a yellow-orangey colour after overdosing on the Beta-carotene in the drink. To be fair, she was drinking 1.5 litres of the stuff a day but this was the straw that broke Sunny Delight’s back. Sales halved, causing the company to have to rebrand in 2003.
Did they discontinue SunnyD?
They rebranded in 2003, and again in 2009, with less sugar and more real fruit juice, but it never fully recovered from the controversy. While Sunny Delight can still be found in stores today, it no longer has the massive popularity that it enjoyed during its ’90s heyday.
