I had the opportunity to talk to Joe Williamson, a long-time Haxe user and the winner of Ludum Dare 45, about himself, his game World Collector and, of course, Haxe.
When did Ludum Dare?
Ludum Dare was founded in April 2002 by Geoff Howland. Today and for many years it’s been operated by Mike Kasprzak. In April 2002, Ludum Dare began as a dare. Geoff Howland proposed a challenge: “Lets try making games from scratch in 24 hours”.
How many people participate in Ludum Dare?
An unprecedented event We still want you to give ratings, but with so many people taking part (over 13000 on over 10000 teams), so few people will get brag-worthy ratings.
How often does Ludum Dare happen?
How often do you do Ludum Dare events? Currently we do them every 6 months: Every April and October.
What do you get for winning Ludum Dare?
There’s no actual prize for the winners. “The prize is your product,” Mike says. “Sure, we could have prizes, but being able to say ‘I made this’ is pretty amazing. And it doesn’t hurt that since we’ve become more popular: ‘I made a top game in Ludum Dare’ is now something to brag about.”

How does Ludum Dare work?
Ludum Dare is an event where you create a game from scratch in a weekend based on a theme. Themes are suggested and chosen by the community. Theme Suggestions are accepted starting 5 weeks before the event. Theme Voting kicks off 2 weeks before the event.
Why is it called a game jam?
“Jam” is a reference to musicial jam sessions. Similarly, the goal with a “game jam” is to come together and make a videogame, or a non-digital (analog) game like a board game or card game. Participants rapidly prototype game designs and inject new ideas to help inspire and grow the global game industry.
Do game jams have prizes?
There were no money prizes, but I got a free year of C3 license and a great collection of plugins. “Generally speaking, sometimes you can win prices like consoles and other goods but I think straight up money prices are rare.”

Who is the organizer of Ludum Dare 2014?
Until 2014, the event was very informal as the Ludum Dare team worked on it in their spare time. Due to the increasing number of contestants, long-time organizer Mike Kasprzak announced in September 2014 that he would attempt at setting up a business model allowing him to work full-time on the project.
What is the structure of the Ludum Dare competition?
Competition structure. Currently, Ludum Dare is held three times a year. In the week preceding each competition suggested themes are subject to votes by prospective participants. A theme is subsequently announced before participants are given 48 hours to create a video game (although board games or similar are accepted) that fits within it.
