The word Sufi originated from Suffa which was established by the Holy Prophet Muhammad –may peace and love be upon him—next to Al-Masjid an-Nibali. those people who resided in Ashab al-Suffa were usually orphans, who were striving to learn business, art, agriculture and Islam. There traditions and their knowledge is what Sufi practices.

Before that Tasawwuf (Sufism) was limited to Sunni Muslims. Even the Safaviyya Sufi order was originally Sunni and founded by the Sunni Shaykh Ardabili who was a Shafii madhab follower.
